Data on the distribution, biomorphology, ecological and phytocenotic features, and protection of Carex capitata L. in the Vologda Region are presented. The choice of the object of study is associated with the rarity of the species in the region and its poor knowledge base. Capitate sedge is currently known from 13 localities situated in night administrative districts. All records are concentrated in the northern and partly central and northeastern parts of the region. Findings of the species fall within the boundaries of 10 squares of grid mapping adopted in Atlas Florae Europaeae. The growth form of the species is defined as a resid-rhizomatous non-turfy perennial polycarpic grass with erect assimilating shoots of a non-succulent type and iterative growth of the shoot axis. The main biotopes of C. capitata are eutrophic mires of groundwater feeding, less often paludified meadows and the shores of small (especially intra-mires) lakes. The species prefers weakly or moderately forested grass-moss mire cenoses, hummocky or carpet forms of microrelief. The species is included in the Red Data Book of the Vologda Region with the 2/EN/II conservation status. C. capitata was recorded within the boundaries of three special protected natural areas (landscape natural reserves (zakaznik’s) “Verdengsky” and “Chuchkin Bor”, and municipal mire complex “Boloto Shilovskoe”). The authors recommend the continuation of bioecological studies of the species, control and monitoring of the state of populations identified in the region, targeted surveys for new places of its growth, and the organization of new protected areas for large populations.
